The Art of the Bandura 🎼📸

A few days ago, I heard a beautiful melody drifting through the city center. Curious, I followed the sound and found a musician playing an instrument I had never seen before, the Bandura.

The Bandura is one of Ukraine’s most treasured instruments, blending elements of the lute and zither. Its roots trace back centuries to the kobza played by Ukrainian Cossacks. Over time, it became a powerful symbol of Ukrainian culture, history, and resilience, with wandering kobzars using it to preserve stories, poetry, and folk traditions through music.

Standing there, I was reminded that music knows no borders. You don’t need to understand a language or its history to feel its impact. A melody can reach anyone, connecting strangers in quiet moments amid a busy city.

It was an honour to document such a talented artist and her Bandura. Moments like these are why I always carry my camera you never know when a story will reveal itself.

As the saying goes,
“Where words fail, music speaks.” Music touches the soul. Photography preserves the moment it did. 📸✨
